The Righteous Under Severe Trials

“O our God, wilt Thou not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon Thee:”  (II Chronicles 20:12)

Eyes on You

One of my favorite Bible lessons is found in the book of II Chronicles, Chapter 20. The story involves King Jehoshaphat and the children a Judah facing an epic battle. What amazes me so much is the confession Jehoshaphat makes concerning his outlook.

We live in a world that promotes positive confession and thinking. When faced with any obstacle we are all taught to handle it by believing that we can do it! Well, Jehoshaphat would have flunked with the words he expressed towards his challenge. II Chronicles 20:12 says, “O our God, wilt Thou not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; (WHAT?) neither know we what to do: (WHAT!) but our eyes are upon Thee:

Can you believe that Jehoshaphat confessed that they we getting ready to lose a battle? He even confessed that He didn’t know what to do? Can you imagine your leader, coach or anyone you depend on expressing that you were no match for what you were about to face? At face value, the first thought in my mind is this person has no confidence!

I personally know that this is not the case. I personally had to live this verse of scripture about 15 years ago. God sent me to Pastor a Church that was close to 1 million dollars in debt. A few weeks after my arrival and installation, I was informed that the banks were beginning the process of FORECLOSURE on the Church God sent me to Pastor. Granted, I had never pastored a day in my life! Neither did I nor my wife have one million dollars in our account. I can remember seeing (in my mind) padlocks on the front entrance of the Church I was to Pastor. I also remember going to my prayer room in our home to get God’s take on the situation.

To my amazement, the Lord led me to II Chronicles 20:12! What you are about to read is the honest truth on what God led me to do, the thoughts I had and the outcome. Just as the scripture says; I knew we had no might against the POTENTIAL FORECLOSURE. Because we had no amount of money that could reverse the banks decision; Strike ONE! Nor did I know what to do! I had never been in a position like this before. I never had the experience needed to aid me in what to do. Strike TWO!

The WARFARE in my mind was relentless. Have you ever faced foreclosure, repossession, insurmountable debt that froze you in your tracks? While in my prayer room, the Lord instructed me to return to the Church and inform the Board members word for word, II Chronicles 20:12. That’s RIGHT! The Lord instructed me to tell the people (that had just voted and accepted me to be their Pastor and leader ) that we had no might against this situation and that neither know what I could do.

What newly elected leader informs the people that trusted him to lead them something like II Chronicles 20:12? Before we address that, I must inform you that I had the biggest war going on in my mind that I had ever experienced. Like Paul wrestled in I Corinthians 2:2 when he was determined not to impress with philosophies. My mind screamed: you have to tell these people more than that! They are looking for leadership; not someone that comes up empty. God are you sure you want me to tell these people that I don’t have an answer? These kinds of answers leave people doubting your ability. “You need to show them that they made the right choice so come up with something.”

Back and forth my mind went until God settled me. That was 15 years ago and we are still in our Church! You see, God knows how to make you look good but you must do things His way. Make no mistake, only God gets the GLORY! But He will never allow you to look foolish when you say what He says, the key to the whole verse is when Jehoshaphat said but our eyes are upon Thee. We kept our eyes on the Lord and He led us through the most trying time of our lives. Miracles still happen for people that keep their eyes on the Lord. So whatever you are going through in your life right now, trust God and watch Him bring you through your trial.

Finally, during the course of our journey I’ve heard people say that Pastor Pleasant and his wife found a Gold Mine when they got their Church. I always say, “God led us to a Coal Mine that was loaded with diamonds!

Be Blessed,
